Arguments and Back to The Future
People argue with each other all the time. It is almost natural for a lot of people to do it, but what is an argument? An argument is a set of statements used to determine the degree of truth of another statement. This means that there are usually two sides to an argument, each one discussing and trying to prove that their side is right. In academic arguments, which are the ones that the class will be learning about in AP seminar, are unlike other kinds of arguments because they use careful and researched claims and evidenced to help show which side has better reasoning. In general there are two kinds of arguments: deductive and inductive. Deductive arguments are valid and accurate, and have all of its assumptions proven. This means that deductive arguments are fully factually and have to be true Inductive arguments, on the other hand, are more based the predictions that have been established by the premises used in the argument. Inductive arguments are more of an educated guess based on present facts, so they could be right or wrong. Any argument, deductive or inactive should have a line of reasoning, claims, and evidence supporting those claims. A line of reasoning is a logically path that guides the audiences through all of the argument's points and to a final conclusion. That line of reasoning should be easy to understand. Claims are assertions made by the author used to support the argument. Evidence is made of of facts to prove an arguments claims and confirm the final conclusion.
"Back to the Future" is not the best movie series, but "The Avengers" is. My claims are that the Avengers is more popular, more modernly produced, and can reach out to bigger audiences with its simple plot. The last movie of The Avengers franchise called Avengers End Game made $300 million in opening week, became the top grossing movie in the world, had over 100,000,00 viewers opening day, and broke the biggest single day premier record in 20 countries. In contrast to Avengers End Game, which broke box office records, Back to The Future III only grossed $244 million. The first avengers movie just called "The Avengers" made $1.519 billion in box office, while Back to The Future only made $388.8 million. Avengers producers also had access to the use of CGI, a lot better filming equipment, and better quality of video.
Exercise 1:
1. 9 is not prime number because it is divisible by 3, and prime numbers can not be divisible by anything other than 1 and itself.
2. 7 is a prime number because it is only divisible by 1 and itself.
3. A water molecule has three atoms in it, which are 1 hydrogen and 2 oxygen, because only those atoms are what makes up its atomic structure.
4. Water is not made up of carbon because it atomic structure only allows for it to have the one hydrogen and two oxygen atoms, and if there was carbon than it wouldn't be water anymore.
5. The U.S. president lives in Washington D.C. because he lives in the White House there and that is where his job requires him to be.
6. The Earth is not flat because you can see the curvature in the horizon up high, gravity requires it to be spherical, and NASA has proved through satellite images that the Earth is round.
7. Humans have walked on the moon because there is picture evidence, scientific devices have been implanted on it, and samples of the moon have been brought back.
8. Most bicycles have two wheels because it is the standard in manufacturing them and the most practical amount of wheels it should have to keep riders safe and balanced, but also able to ride quickly and great distances.
