Merriam-Webster’s word of the year shows that" by  Benjamin Dreyer, he talks about how the word "they" should be used more often in talking to non-binary people or talking about someone or something that could be either gender. Dreyer talks about the new grammar techniques that will be used with using "they" and how more writers are using it all the time. I agree that more writers should use "they" instead of "he" as the default gender, a point that needs emphasizing since so many people believe that "they" should be used. By focusing on the use of "they", Dreyer overlooks the deeper problem of gender stereotypes. Many people still believe today that men are more dominant than women. 1. Should children under 17 be banned from buying violent video games? Parents believe that children under 17 should be banned from buying violent video games because it promotes bad behavior and exposes them to inappropriate material. Children under 17 argue that they should be able to buy violent video games because they are just for entertainment and won't affect their everyday behaviors. Video game companies believe that anyone under 17 can play their games as long as they have parental permission. 2.  Is college education worth the expense? 1.  In the article Single-Sex Education: Positive Effects, author Jennifer Sills references many “they say” quotations in her text. Sills integrated the quote into her text by first saying what the opposition believes and shutting their point down. Then Sills writes “They also claim that” before writing the quote. She uses this quote to show that they used an unreliable source. After the quote, she continues with her main point. Based on what I’ve read I think that Sills could do a better job at explaining the actual quote and introducing it. Instead of saying “they also claim that”, she could write “Their point is that”. 2. For class, I wrote about the benefits of single-sex schools. I used many direct quotes from sources agreeing with my argument, but I could’ve used some that were from articles against my argument.  1. In kid's sports, it is important to give them all participation trophies because it encourages kindness and support. Kids will be more determined to play sports or other activities if they can all get some kind of award. This also boosts morale and helps kids to reassure that they can do anything they want. Lots of parents agree that all the kids that played on the field worked hard, and why should they not be compensated for their work? Why should kids not all get rewards if they all participated and played their best? I urge children's sports leagues to consider giving all kids a trophy for playing their hardest and inspire kids to keep playing sports. I believe that not all kids should get participation trophies because it does not teach them the right life skills.  Argument: Single-sex public schools should be more prominent because they help kids learn better than in co-educational schools. Claims and Evidence 1. Improvement in Behavior  In co-educational schools, girls and boys can be distracted by each other and act out to impress each other, but in single-sex schools girls and boys are separated and can focus on their academics. In single sex schools, girls are more likely to participate, boys are more likely to be cooperative, and both are more likely to have better attendance records.   Janice Streitmatter studied and compared the results of girls taking physics in a coeducational and single-sex setting and found that " in the single- sex physics class 87.5% of the girls made an ‘A’ and 12.5% of the girls made a ‘B’; whereas in the coeducational class only 14.3% of the girls made an ‘A’, 14.3% made a ‘B’, and 71.4% made a ‘C’".
